Dr. Fitzsimmons received her MS in Physical Therapy from Pacific University and her DPTSc in Physical Therapy from UCSF. Prior to her doctoral studies, she spent over a decade in clinical practice, with an emphasis on acute care and acute rehabilitation.
Dr. Fitzsimmons has been an invaluable member of the core faculty in the UCSF/SFSU Graduate Program in Physical Therapy since she joined the faculty in 2013. She has been instrumental in enhancing the professionalism course content in our Program and has been a department leader in the development of student professionalism reflection and assessment. In addition, Dr. Fitzsimmons has been a consistently strong champion for developing a robust interprofessional education program (IPE) at UCSF.
Dr. Fitzsimmons is a founding board member for the American Physical Therapy Association’s National Interprofessional Education Consortium and was elected to the National Academies of Practice. Dr. Fitzsimmons also serves on the American Physical Therapy Association’s Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Strategic Working Group. She has received several awards and honors, including the UCSF Excellence in Teaching Award and the UCSF School of Medicine Essential Core Teaching Award: Commitment to Teaching.
Dr. Fitzsimmons’ leadership, dedication, and vision will pave the way for the continued growth and success of the department. We are excited for the beginning of this new chapter in Dr. Fitzsimmons’ already distinguished career. She will carry on in the tradition of Dr. Kimberly Topp, who selflessly served the department for 11-years, leading the department through significant growth, and being a
a champion for interprofessional education, diversity, and inclusion.
