Justin Hong, 2022 DPT Candidate

"Justin Hong was born in April 1985, at the age of 0. He was 4 weeks premature, which is a good thing because the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck, and he might have died if he wasn’t born early.” So begins the author bio of a picture book Justin wrote in elementary school titled “Benny and the Pebble”, which explores profound themes including materialism, the dangers of racial profiling, and the importance of remembering where you leave your pebble.

Unlike many of his younger and more focused classmates, Justin had no idea what he wanted to do with his life after he graduated from UC Berkeley in 2007 with a BA in Economics. The following decade saw him working at a homeless shelter in East Oakland, restoring urban creeks in Contra Costa County while living at his church during a yearlong service internship, providing BLS transport services as an EMT, driving a tractor and feeding pigs on an organic farm in Alberta, and serving as an infantry officer in the US Army. In 2017, Justin returned home to CA and completed all his science prerequisites before finally applying to PT school and landing a coveted spot as part of the UCSF/SFSU DPT Class of 2022. Over the past three years, Justin has been honored to serve as Class Co-President for such an incredible group of intelligent, compassionate, and resilient Student Physical Therapists, and he is excited to see the transformative impact they have on the profession as they begin their careers.
