Goals and Outcomes

Entry-level DPT Students/Graduates


Below are the goals and student learning outcomes for students in the Entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy degree program. Student learning outcomes are measured using a range of measures, including course grades, student participation in extracurricular activities, performance on qualifying assessment exams, surveys administered to current students and alumni, and assessments by employers. Data collected is used in quality improvement efforts related to admissions, clinical education, curriculum evaluation, and faculty and physical resource needs.

The Mission of the Graduate Program in Physical Therapy is to develop collaborative professionals in physical therapy practice, education, social responsibility, and discovery and translation of science to improve health.  

In developing our program and student goals we have adopted:

Value 1: Patient Care, Community, Professionalism

 

Goal #1.1: Program will offer models of best practice in clinical care, clinical instruction, and outreach/service to community

Objectives and threshold criteria:

  1. Program will promote clinical specialization among clinicians to ensure best practice in the clinic.

    • 75% of clinical faculty will have specialty certification.

  2. Program will provide American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Clinical Instructor (CI) credentialing courses for all clinicians in the faculty practices and for without-salary faculty in the inpatient facilities.​

    • 75% of clinical and WOS faculty will obtain CI credentialing.

  3. Program will offer interprofessional education opportunities.​

    • Program will offer at least 1 core interprofessional learning opportunity in each year of the program and one elective opportunity in years 2 and 3.

  4. Program will establish a centralized mechanism through which students can participate in community engagement.​

    • With faculty and staff support, program will maintain a resource site of community engagement opportunities.

    • Program will sustain 3 partnerships with community-based organizations that represent underserved communities.

  5. Program will improve infrastructure to support clinical faculty development of continuing education courses.​

    • Program will offer 2 continuing education courses per year.

    • Program will provide annual Spring Symposium available to the professional community for continuing education credit.

  6. Program will facilitate faculty involvement in advocacy in the community.

    • 50% of faculty will participate in health care advocacy. This may include direct service to the individual or family, and activities that promote health and access to health care in communities and the larger public.

  7. Program will support development of clinical education partnerships.

    • Program will evaluate the feasibility and resources needed to strengthen the UC-wide academic/clinical partnership.

Goal #1.2: Students will practice patient-centered care and participate in outreach and service to the community, striving to improve access, equity, and quality of treatment and education, with emphasis on communities of need

Objectives and threshold criteria:

  1. Students will provide patient centered care.

    • 100% of students demonstrate professional behaviors. (Professional Rubric standards, Year 3 entry level CPI # 2 Professional Behaviors).

    • 100% of students incorporate an understanding of cultural differences in patient care, (Year 3 entry level CPI #5 Cultural Competence).

    • 100% of student are able to effectively communicate with patients, family members, caregivers, and health professionals (Year 3 entry level CPI #4 Communication).

  2. Students will participate in IPE learning activities.

    • 100% of students will participate in IPE education opportunities in each year of study.

  3. Students will participate in community engagement activities.

    • 80% of students will participate in community engagement opportunities.

    • 90% of students participate in health care advocacy.

    • 100% of students will have accessed a community engagement resource site.


Value 2: Education, Courage, Integrity

 

Goal 2.1 Program will be innovative and forward-thinking while remaining aligned with ACAPT best practices

Objectives and threshold criteria:

  1. Program will complete a full audit of the current curriculum to identify necessary improvements.

    • By June 2020, a complete curriculum audit will be completed.

  2. Program will support faculty and staff development and educational leadership opportunities.

    • 75% of the core faculty will participate in a professional conference every two years.

    • Greater than 60 minutes of faculty development will be incorporated into faculty retreats and faculty meetings each year.

    • Staff will annually utilize evidence-based techniques and technology to support and train faculty.

    • The Director of Graduate Education will participate in the APTA Educational Leadership Conference every year.

    • At least one faculty member will participate in the APTA Educational Leadership Conference every year.

  3. Program will seek and be responsive to student feedback.

    • Student feedback sessions will be scheduled once a semester.

    • Core faculty will rotate through student feedback sessions with two to three faculty attending each session.

  4. Program will offer opportunities for student elective courses such as practice specialties, informatics, technology in healthcare, research, global health, health equity, interprofessional education, and leadership.​

    • The curriculum committee will solicit and review elective courses each semester.

    • The Program will offer at least 3 elective courses per year.

    • A system for tracking student participation in electives will be implemented by June 2020.

  5. Program will strengthen and expand the current Orthopedic and Acute Care residency programs.

    • The feasibility and resources needed to support residency expansion of the Orthopedic and Acute Care programs will be examined.

    • The feasibility and resources needed to establish new residency programs (neurologic) will be examined.

    • 10% of DPT graduates will apply to a UCSF residency in Orthopedics or Acute Care.

Goal 2.2 Students will develop their professionalism, clinical skills, and unique abilities​

Objectives and threshold criteria:

  1. Students will participate in opportunities to provide feedback and be involved in curricular modifications.

  2. As needed, student representatives will participate in the curriculum committee and student success committee during their three years in the program. Students will take electives or participate in panel discussions that promote their professional development, such as Spring Symposium and CSM Debrief.​

    • At least 95% of students will attend or participate in professional development.

    • 50% of students will participate in at least one elective course during the DPT program.

  3. Students will complete the program with expected high academic standards.​

    • 100% of students will pass qualifying exams.

    • 100% of students will graduate with a GPA of at least 3.0 at each campus.

  4. Students will demonstrate entry level clinical competency prior to graduation.​

    • 100% of students demonstrate entry level performance on CPI criteria #1-6.

    • 100% of students demonstrate entry level performance on at least 9 of CPI criteria #7-18 (75% of these items).

  5. Students will pass the licensing exam.

    • 100% of the students pass the licensing exam.


 Value 3: Research, Life of Mind, and Excellence

 

Goal 3.1 Program will create and support opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to grow their areas of expertise, increase their use of evidence-based practices, and engage in research and dissemination.

Objectives and threshold criteria:

  1. Program will provide mentoring, collaboration, and resources that enable creative or scholarly work, and the dissemination and promotion of results.​

    • 100% of junior faculty will be assigned a program mentor.

    • 100% of faculty will have evidence of dissemination of scholarly/creative activity (e.g. publications, posters, platform presentations, education workshops).

    • 100% of Program staff will attend professional development courses annually.

  2. Program promotes faculty, staff, student engagement in basic science, clinical, translational, or educational research and supports dissemination of new knowledge.​

    • 25% of students will participate in a research project with faculty, by their last quarter.

    • 50% of clinical faculty will participate in primary research either independently or as collaborators.

    • 100% of core faculty will have evidence of peer reviewed dissemination.

    • 25% of staff will collaborate with faculty on educational scholarship projects.

  3. Program will support DPT student progress towards residency programs or other advanced degrees such as PhD, DSc, MPH.

    • 50% of students will apply to residency or advanced degree programs upon graduation from the DPT program.

  4. The Program will expand the PhD program and develop DPT/PhD articulated degree program.​

    • 1-2 student from the UCSF/SFSU DPT program will matriculate into the UCSF PhD program every 4 years.

    • The program will obtain grant support to sustain the PhD program and provide tuition support.

    • The program will hire additional research faculty to provide greater research opportunities for PhD and DPT/PhD students.

Goal 3.2 Students will develop an appreciation for and engage in research

Objectives and threshold criteria:

  1. Students will participate in scientific inquiry during their studies at UCSF/SFSU.​

    • 25% of students will participate in a research project with faculty, by their last quarter.

    • 100% of students will conduct a structured literature review and critically evaluate the evidence.

    • 100% of students pass the culminating experience of evidence-based presentation and paper.

  2. Students will contribute to the body of knowledge in physical therapy.

    • 100% of students incorporate evidence in inservices and case studies in clinical clerkships.

    • 100% of students will disseminate research in a public forum at UCSF or SFSU.

    • 15% of students will disseminate research in a public forum at state or national professional meetings.

    • 75% of students will attend a state or national scientific/research conference once during the 3-year program.


Value 4: Diversity, Equity, Respect

 

Program Goal 4.1:  Program will attract and support a diverse faculty, staff, and student body, within an inclusive environment

Objectives and threshold criteria:

  1. Program will develop pathways to increase faculty and staff diversity*.​

    • Program will increase underrepresented* faculty by 3% within 1 year, and by 6% in 2 years.

    • Staff will represent a diverse* population.

  2. Program will develop pathways to increase student body diversity.​

    • Program will develop a tiered mentorship program.

    • Program will use the direction provided by faculty committees to provide pathways for underrepresented students beginning in middle and high school.

    • Program admissions will utilize a holistic approach which values diversity.

  3. Program will evaluate the inclusiveness of the learning and work environment.

    • Program will utilize results of a faculty, staff, and student climate survey annually.

    • Program will provide Faculty Development around the creation and sustainability of inclusive learning environments.

    • 100% of new Faculty will participate in UCSF sponsored, day long Diversity Champion Training.

Goal 4.2 Students will represent the diversity* valued by the program and experience an inclusive learning environment

Objectives and threshold criteria:

  1. Students will represent the diverse* population of California.​

    • Student body will comprise at least 40% underrepresented* students.

  2. Student success will be supported by program structures.

    • 100% of students will be supported by a peer mentor as well as a faculty advisor for all three years.

    • 100% of students who are under Academic or Behavioral Review will have a support plan.

    • 100% of students who participate in leadership, service, advocacy, and/or professional meetings will be acknowledged.

* Underrepresented or diversity with respect to factors such as race, ethnicity, sexual/gender identity, socioeconomic status, etc.


Value 5: Public Service and Resilience

 

5.1 Program, and the individuals within in it, will be recognized for advocacy, leadership, and service.

Objectives and threshold criteria:

  1. The Program will provide opportunities for faculty and staff service activities that benefit the universities, community, and physical therapy profession.​

    • 100% of faculty will serve on department or university level committees.

    • 50% of program staff will be contributing members in multiple communities (e.g. program committees, campus initiatives)

  2. The Program will support faculty membership and leadership in local, national, and international communities.​

    • 100% of faculty will be actively engaged in their professional organization.

  3. The Program will provide the infrastructure and governance of the program to ensure strategic plan is implemented.​

  4. The Program will evaluate its goals and objectives.​

    • Annual progress on Strategic plan will be reported annually to faculty.

  5. The Program will increase visibility.

    • Faculty and staff will create a cohesive plan to increase social media presence, update program websites, and develop program branding.

5.2 Students will be advocates for the Physical Therapy Profession and leaders in their communities

Objectives and threshold criteria:

  1. Students will participate in local, state, and national advocacy.

    • 10% will participate in CPTA Legislative Day or similar advocacy event.

    • Each cohort will have a student representative at the CPTA Assembly or Student Conclaves.

    • 50% of students will send a letter/email to their representative.

    • 25% of students will serve in a leadership role in student government or other professional organization.
