Learners, faculty, providers, and alumni of UCSF and the UCSF/SFSU Graduate Program in Physical Therapy presented their research and connected with physical therapy and rehabilitation experts from across the country for the American Physical Therapy Association's Combined Sections Meeting, the largest physical therapy conference in the nation. This year’s conference took place in Houston February 13-15, 2025.

Global Health Special Interest Group Abstract Award for Social Responsibility
Gianna Souza, Mahsa Fanaei, Sang Su Pak, and Victor Cheuy have been recognized with the APTA Global Health Special Interest Group Abstract Award for Social Responsibility for their research on disparities in outpatient orthopedic physical therapy utilization among patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Their study aims to shed light on critical healthcare gaps by characterizing the sociodemographic and healthcare utilization patterns of patients who seek outpatient orthopedic physical therapy services. Given that over 29 million adults in the U.S. have diabetes—with 1 in 5 unaware of their diagnosis—and 36 million adults have CKD, with 9 in 10 unaware, understanding barriers to care is more urgent than ever. This important work highlights the role of physical therapy in addressing health disparities and ensuring equitable access to rehabilitation services for all.
