Faculty Advisors

Background

The DPT program is rigorous, especially in the first year, so in your first summer quarter you will be connected with a faculty advisor who will support you throughout your journey in the program. We expect that you and your advisor will meet a minimum of twice each year – once in the fall and once in the spring. You are encouraged to reach out more often if you need guidance or additional support. For example, if you’re feeling overwhelmed academically, struggling with time management, or need help dealing with stress, please contact your faculty advisor as soon as possible for guidance.

Timeline

  1. April: You will be randomly assigned to a faculty advisor. Notifications will go out automatically to all learners and advisors, and you can see the name of your advisor in the student portal.
  2. May: Virtual meet-and-greet during the final pre-orientation session; you will be split into breakout rooms to get to know your advisors.
  3. Mid-June: Time is built into the class schedule for advisors to meet with their advisee groups (or individuals one-on-one if that’s preferred) to check in on stress levels, study skills, and adjusting to the program in general.
  4. Mid-July: Time is built into the class schedule for advisors to meet with their advisee groups/individuals and check in on grades/content concerns, and share wellness resources.
  5. October advising month: Your faculty advisor will contact you to schedule a time to meet one-on-one. If you don’t hear from your advisor by mid-October, please contact them to schedule. A full list of faculty names, backgrounds, and email addresses can be found on the website.

Guidelines

  1. Don’t be afraid to contact your advisor! They are here to help you and will make time to meet with you.
  2. No switching of advisors. If you feel that your faculty advisor is not responsive, there is a personality conflict, or you’re not getting the support you need, please contact the Program Directors. They will work with you and the advisor to identify a solution and improve communication.
  3. Advisors are provided with a checklist of items to cover when you meet with them. These checklists are based on learner needs that have arisen over the years and can serve as a guide to get your meeting started. Please be sure to also come with any questions, concerns, or updates you’d like to share.
